Polar cooling and freezing cycles produce dense, cold ocean water which helps regulate the overall climate of our planet. Warmer waters, loss of sea ice, invading species, and contaminants delivered from lower latitudes will affect polar marine ecosystems, particularly top polar predators such as bears, seals, and whales. Marine geologists will use their IPY study to establish ocean histories to understand past polar ocean current systems in an effort to develop of new strategies for the sustainable use of polar marine resources.
