The world's changing atmosphere affects polar weather systems, creating spring thaws, sea ice movement, and severe winter storms. Changes in storm frequency and intensity accelerate erosion of polar coastlines. The atmosphere also carries air pollution-such as aerosols and emissions that harm the ozone-from around the world, releasing it over the Arctic and Antarctic, changing polar cloud formation and precipitation. IPY researchers will be studying polar stratospheric clouds, ozone loss, and damaging UV-B radiation penetrating the polar atmosphere.
