Arctic Adventures is a very educational book while at the same time impossible to put down!.  You learn much about the typical themes of the people in the far north including the frigid weather, hunger, hunting and magic.  A serious novel while at the same time a literature delicacy, it is a perfect book for ages eight to thirteen.  The accompanying artwork shows us the uniqueness of Inuit artists.

This book is filled with four shorter stories told by those artists: "Pudlo and Kapik Go Hunting" is about a young boy who on an ice floe, drifts out to sea.  "Kenojuak and the Goddess of the Sea" explores a universe of magic and mysteries.  "Oonark's Arctic Adventure" is about a mother and young daughter who are lost and alone on the icy, barren tundra.  Lastly, "Lazarosie and the Polar Bear" shows us how close the relationship between the Inuits and animals can be.

At the end of each story there is a short biography of each illustrator. The book includes a glossary, map, Author's Note and further reading recommendations.  Raquel Rivera's research definitely paid off.  I hope you LOVE this book as much as I did.

Get ready to hear about the Arctic region and how much daylight they do or do not have and discover some of the most astonishing verbs, onomatopoeia and metaphors in the world!  Watch as you turn the pages, the hours of daylight rapidly decrease and see the actions of the many different animals that are illustrated on each page.

Word choice will blow you away!  You will stare at the eye-popping pictures carefully designed by the illustrator, Jon Van Zyle;  it will give you a whole new meaning of detailed!  You will feel like you are inside of the book with the world completely created of acrylic paint.

The months of the year pass by with every flip of a page; it feels like the time is passing on the actual earth.  Sink you eyes in the glossary as you read the amazing definitions of all the words that you may have never heard of before.  Open the book and pass over the cover page and you will see the interesting introduction.  It includes more info about the Arctic, how the author, Debbie S. Miller, was inspired to write the book and about the author including where she lives.  It includes the average high and low temperatures at the top of each page.

Hear the little person in your head, relaxed and having a conversation with you about the Arctic.  It is informal, not too serious or humorous but still almost impossible to put down.  When are you going to read it?  When you do, I hope you like it as much as I did.

As soon as you read the first sentence of the book, One Small Square Arctic Tundra by Donald M. Silver, your interest will be caught in his net of words.  This book has extremely descriptive language and many interesting facts.  Did you know that when particles from the sun reach Earth they start to glow and cause the Aurora Borealis?  I learned that and many other cool facts in this book.

What makes this book so unique?  It focuses on one small square of the arctic tundra.  On each page, the illustrator has drawn a small square and shaded part of it.  The shaded part is the area in the square the author is talking about on that page.  There are also fun experiments for you to try.

What's that strange animal on page 16?  If you want to know, look in the animal glossary.  There's also a plant glossary, an index, and a map.  If you want to know more, there's a list of other books you can read.  However, there is no information about the author.  Detailed (and very realistic) pictures await you inside this book.  Patricia J. Wynne is an excellent artist.

This is a great book.  It is informational and serious but not too serious.  I think you should read it today!

Sydney and Jill - First Grade

Anna was a puppy.  She was very brave and strong.  Pam was her owner.  Anna was the smallest in her litter.  Pam was preparing the puppies for a long and difficult expedition.  Pam made Anna the lead dog next to Douggie.  Douggie ran away, but later on all the dogs found Douggie.  Then they started the expedition again.  It was getting warmer.  Anna fell into the ice.  Pam shouted "Haw!"  Douggie pulled, but he was too weak.  The team jumped into action.  They pulled her out.  They were soon standing on dry solid land.  They finished the expedition.  We liked it so much we would like you to read it!

My first graders loved this inspiring story of Anna the little sled dog with a big heart. We thought all was lost when Anna broke through the ice, but teamwork between the musher and her dogs saved the day. The book has a nice map of the 2,500 mile trek that took almost a year to complete. It also has photos of Anna and her musher Pam Flowers. My class liked seeing Anna's paw print on the inside front cover of the book. This is a "Read it again!" story.
